Table Color

This page demonstrates how to set the table color within your web pages and other HTML documents.

In HTML, table color is defined using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). You can change the color of the whole table, part of the table (eg, table cells or table borders), and the text within the table cells.

The CSS property to use will depend on which element you’re changing the color of. For example, to change the background color, you need to use the background-color property. To change the color of the text within the table, simply use the color property.

Below are some examples of applying a table border in HTML.

Table Background Color

You can use the CSS background-color property to change the background color of the whole table.

Table Row Color

You can change the background color of a table row:

You can change the background color of an individual table cell:

Table Text Color

You can change the color of text within a table. To change the color of the text within the table, you need to use the color property. By the way, you don’t need to apply this element against each piece of text — you can apply it to the whole table.

In this example, I change the color of the text to black, but I also change the table header text to white:

Table Border Color

You can set a table border and change its color too. To do this, you can use the border property. You also need to specify how wide the border is and what style.

In the following example, we use CSS classes to set the border color and other properties against the table and its cells.

Table Color with CSS Classes

You should use CSS classes where ever possible when setting styles for your HTML documents. You can define these classes in an embedded style sheet or external style sheet.

Here’s an example of using an embedded style sheet to define the styles of your HTML tables. Note that the styles are set in between the opening and closing tags.

HTML Table Background Color

Using Classes

The above examples use inline style sheets to set the CSS properties. This is only because it makes it easier for demonstration purposes. I strongly encourage you to use a CSS class defined in an external style sheet to set your styles. Even embedded style sheets are usually better than inline.

Setting All Background Styles

There is a shorthand CSS property that allows you to set all your background styles in one go. This property is the background property.

This is the property that most web developers use for setting their table backgrounds, as it’s quicker to use and it helps to minimize code. This property allows you to set the background color and a background image properties using one property. You can see it in action with the following example.

Table Background Image

Here’s an example of adding a background image to your table by using the CSS background-image property.

The background image in this example automatically repeats across the full width and height of the table. In other words, if the background image is smaller than the table, it will be displayed again and again until it reaches the edge of the table.

Here’s the actual image that we will use in the following example:

As you can see, this image is smaller than the width of the table, so it repeated across the full width and height of the table.

In this example, we also add a thin border to our table. Here’s more about HTML table borders.

Non-Repeating Background Image

Sometimes you might not want the background image to repeat. Sometimes you might want it to appear once only. For this effect, you can use the CSS background-repeat property. You can also use the background-position property to define where the image is positioned within the table. For example, you could position the image in the center of the table, or at the top-left or bottom-right etc.

Background Image on Table Cells

You could also add a background image to each individual table cell. You could use a different image for each cell or the same image. If you use the same image, it would give it that «repeat» effect and the «repeat» could be precisely aligned with each table cell (but it doesn’t have to be). You could also achieve this effect using a repeating background image on the whole table, but you’d need to ensure that each cell is exactly the same size as the image, and you might need to play around with the table border.

Here, we add a different background color to the first row, which happens to be the table header row. Therefore, we have one background color for the table, and a different background color for the table header row. Note that we also change the text color for the table header — this makes it easier to read.

Using CSS Classes

It’s good practice to keep your CSS separate from the table when setting its styles. For example, you can define all your styles at the top of your HTML document or even in a separate CSS file. When you do this, you can create a «class» that holds all the styles for your table (or any other element). Then, to use these styles, you simply add class=»» where is the name of your class.

Here’s an example of using an embedded style sheet to define the background color of your HTML tables. Note that the styles are set in between the tags.

Here’s another example, but this one’s using a different set of styles, including a different background color for the table and the table header.

You’ll notice that we’ve also modified the bottom border of each table cell and changed the font family within each table cell (but not the table headers).
