CSS Color Codes
Use the following color picker or color charts to pick a color that you can use within your CSS code. The color picker provides the color values in hexadecimal and RGB. The color chart provides them in hexadecimal, RGB, and their color names.

Basic CSS Colors
Here is a table of the basic color names that have been in CSS since CSS1 (except orange, which was added in CSS 2.1). Try clicking on a value. This will open the color in Quackit’s online editor so you can see how it looks (and grab the code). There’s also a link to a color tester where you can get another preview of the color.

How to use these Colors
- To set a background color, use background-color .
- To set the text color, use color
- To set a border color, use border-color .
Below are quick CSS code examples for applying this color to various HTML elements.
Check out some basic color code examples using color names in the online editor.
Color names are case-insensitive (it doesn’t matter whether you use UPPERCASE or lowercase).
So blue , Blue , and BLUE all display the same color.
In Hexadecimal Notation
Here is the same color, but this time using hexadecimal notation instead of the color name.
So the color code is now 0000ff .
This needs to be prefixed with a hash symbol, so it will become #0000ff when written in the code.
Check out some basic color code examples using hexadecimal values in the online editor.
Hex colors are case-insensitive (it doesn’t matter whether you use UPPERCASE or lowercase).
So 0000ff and 0000FF both display the same color.
In RGB Functional Notation
Here is the same color, but this time using RGB functional notation.
So the color code is now 0,0,255 . This needs to be placed inside the rgb() function, so it will look like this rgb(0,0,255) .
Check out some basic color code examples using RGB functional notation in the online editor.
Full-Page Example
Here is an example of where CSS color codes can fit into an HTML document.
This example uses embedded style sheets. You can also move the styles to an external style sheet so that you can apply the styles across the whole site from one file.
Transparent Colors
CSS also enables us to add transparent colors to our HTML elements. This means that you can add a color that’s semi-transparent — so that you can see the element behind it.
Here’s an example of adding transparency to a color using the rgba() function.
List of Color Values
Here’s a list of color values you can use with CSS.
List of Color Properties
Here’s a list of color-related properties you can use with CSS.
Web Safe Colors
This chart displays the 216 «web safe» colors. Click on a color to display it in a new page.
With current day monitors being able to display millions of colors, there’s little need to use the web safe colors any more. But it’s a great way to pick some basic colors nice and quickly. And hey, it’s still a nice looking chart!

CSS Legal Color Values
Colors in CSS can be specified by the following methods:
- Hexadecimal colors
- Hexadecimal colors with transparency
- RGB colors
- RGBA colors
- HSL colors
- HSLA colors
- Predefined/Cross-browser color names
- With the currentcolor keyword
Hexadecimal Colors
A hexadecimal color is specified with: #RRGGBB, where the RR (red), GG (green) and BB (blue) hexadecimal integers specify the components of the color. All values must be between 00 and FF.
For example, the #0000ff value is rendered as blue, because the blue component is set to its highest value (ff) and the others are set to 00.
Example
Define different HEX colors:
Hexadecimal Colors With Transparency
A hexadecimal color is specified with: #RRGGBB. To add transparency, add two additional digits between 00 and FF.
Example
Define different HEX colors with transparency:
RGB Colors
An RGB color value is specified with the rgb() function, which has the following syntax:
Each parameter (red, green, and blue) defines the intensity of the color and can be an integer between 0 and 255 or a percentage value (from 0% to 100%).
For example, the rgb(0,0,255) value is rendered as blue, because the blue parameter is set to its highest value (255) and the others are set to 0.
Also, the following values define equal color: rgb(0,0,255) and rgb(0%,0%,100%).
Example
Define different RGB colors:
RGBA Colors
RGBA color values are an extension of RGB color values with an alpha channel — which specifies the opacity of the object.
An RGBA color is specified with the rgba() function, which has the following syntax:
The alpha parameter is a number between 0.0 (fully transparent) and 1.0 (fully opaque).
Example
Define different RGB colors with opacity:
HSL Colors
HSL stands for hue, saturation, and lightness — and represents a cylindrical-coordinate representation of colors.
An HSL color value is specified with the hsl() function, which has the following syntax:
hsl(hue, saturation, lightness)
Hue is a degree on the color wheel (from 0 to 360) — 0 (or 360) is red, 120 is green, 240 is blue. Saturation is a percentage value; 0% means a shade of gray and 100% is the full color. Lightness is also a percentage; 0% is black, 100% is white.
Example
Define different HSL colors:
HSLA Colors
HSLA color values are an extension of HSL color values with an alpha channel — which specifies the opacity of the object.
An HSLA color value is specified with the hsla() function, which has the following syntax:
hsla(hue, saturation, lightness, alpha)
The alpha parameter is a number between 0.0 (fully transparent) and 1.0 (fully opaque).
Example
Define different HSL colors with opacity:
Predefined/Cross-browser Color Names
140 color names are predefined in the HTML and CSS color specification.
For example: blue , red , coral , brown , etc:
Example
Define different color names:
A list of all predefined names can be found in our Color Names Reference.
The currentcolor Keyword
The currentcolor keyword refers to the value of the color property of an element.
Example
The border color of the following element will be blue, because the text color of the element is blue:
